Subjects

Core subjects: putting students at the heart of our programme

Between the ages of fourteen and sixteen the vast majority of students study a core of five compulsory subjects (up to the equivalent of 8 GCSEs), with four additional options, leading to GCSE examinations at sixteen:

  • Mathematics (selected students will also take GCSEs and International GCSEs in Further Mathematics)
  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Science (single, double or triple award)
  • French (GCSE and International GCSE or AS and GCSE and International GCSE 1st Language)

Because of our location in Belgium, in the centre of Europe, coupled with our commitment to being a truly International learning community, French is considered a core subject at BSB.

Students studying French are placed in sets according to their ability. Consequently the top sets take their GCSE and International GCSE French exam early, allowing them to continue studying AS Level French and/or GCSE and International GCSE French as a First Language. Students in the top set in Mathematics will also sit their GCSE and International GCSE Further Mathematics exam at the end of Year 11, enabling further study and development of their potential. Students who are selected for Set 1 Science are given the opportunity to enter for separate examinations in Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Triple Award) and will have three Science GCSEs and International GCSEs.

Physical Education (PE) is part of the core curriculum, and students may also choose PE as one of their GCSE examination options.

As essential components of personal development, Personal, Social, Health and Careers Education (PSHCE) remains part of the core, but does not lead to a GCSE qualification.

We offer students the widest possible range of optional subjects to study, from History and Geography to Textiles and Nutrition. All talents are encouraged and developed at BSB.

Students who require additional support are given extra tuition and supervised study options, with special provision made for students with Additional Educational Needs (AEN) and students who are non-native English speakers.

YELLIS Tests

In Year 10, as our students are developing into young adults and taking their first steps towards independence, discovering their unique individuality, we help to prepare for their needs by using the YELLIS test developed by Durham University. The results of these tests enable staff to measure potential and set challenging yet realistic targets. We set achievable personal standards for all our students and offer individual assistance to enable every student to reach them.

Each student chooses their own pathway to success

A one-size-fits-all policy to education doesn't work. Students are individuals. At BSB, we treat them as such. As well as studying core subjects such as Maths, English, Science and French, all Secondary School students are encouraged to pursue their own interests and study subjects of personal interest to them. Individuality is encouraged. Talents are nurtured. Everyone's contribution is welcomed.
