English
A wide-ranging understanding of English language and literature is an essential part of every student’s education. At BSB, we teach English in a way that enhances students’ understanding of the vocabulary and rich history of the language and enables them to develop key verbal and written communication skills, as well as improving critical thinking. Most importantly of all, we aim to give students a genuine appreciation of literature and a love of the English language.
Additional support is available for students with limited English speaking ability to enable them to participate fully in the School community, enabling every student to develop their communication skills.
Students are given the opportunity to study a wide range of poetry, plays and novels within their courses, as well as exploring media, non-fiction texts and speaking and listening skills.
The Department is keen to include a rich cultural diversity within its schemes of work in order to help educate our students socially as well as academically. Students are well supported outside the classroom, with a number of extra-curricular activities available, ranging from book clubs to discussion groups.
Curriculum
Years 7 to 9 learn to enjoy English using a variety of learning and teaching styles. Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities. We cover everything from Shakespeare to the 20th Century Novel, taking in literature and cultural contexts from around the world.
Years 10 and 11 study the Cambridge (I)GCSE in English Language and English Literature. Students are entered for both examinations unless there are exceptional circumstances. Learning takes place continually, with 50% of the final Language mark and 25% of the Literature mark being assessed using coursework.
Years 12 and 13 are encouraged to hone their analytical skills and prepare themselves to study English at university. Learning to appreciate literature and to think critically is essential. Students may pursue either the A Level or IB Diploma path towards a qualification. The IB Diploma offers two levels, Standard and Higher, enabling students to choose a path suitable for them.
