Mathematics

Mathematics at BSB is a rich world of abstract ideas, problem solving, and numerical skills that students can apply to their everyday lives, as well as to more complicated theoretical problems. Students learn to think analytically and logically, developing a wide range of important skills. Alongside revelling in the art of mathematical problem solving they are able to complement learning in other areas such as finance, business, economics, the sciences, and even taking their statistical skills into subjects such as sociology and geography.

Our teaching staff are fully committed to providing a solid and broad education: students are taught a balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application of Mathematics, following a combination of the UK curriculum combined with international qualifications in Mathematics.

There is a strong tradition of students having the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular mathematical competitions including the UKMT mathematical challenges and the Belgian Olympiads. The Mathematics Department has extensive online resources and support which is made available to all BSB students through its VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Curriculum

Students in Years 7 to 9 are organised into sets on the basis of ability and are assessed continuously throughout the course to track their progress – sets change to reflect student needs. The course adapts and supplements the UK Framework for Secondary Mathematics.

Students in Years 10 and 11 all students work towards the Edexcel International GCSE in Mathematics. Very able students have the opportunity to study for an International GCSE in Further Mathematics, giving them both an additional challenge and early preparation for further study at A level or IB.

Students in Years 12 and 13 many students opt to study Mathematics with the intention of further study in Mathematics and related fields. They can follow either the IB or A level route. At IB, Higher level, Standard level and Mathematical Studies are offered. At A level both Maths and Further Maths can be studied with Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths option modules available.
