Food and nutrition

Students who enjoy cooking will love our Food and Nutrition programme. But there’s something for everyone else too. At BSB we see Food and Nutrition is an essential life skill. We look at foods from around the world and use them to enhance students’ understanding of different cultures. Students are challenged to develop their taste buds and expand their horizons. There's something for the scientist too, with a variety of scientific principles invoked in the culinary process. At BSB, food and nutrition is a mixture of science and art.

The subject is about working with food in order to develop practical skills. Students are introduced to the concept of planning healthy, well balanced family meals – then encouraged to do just that.

Curriculum

Years 7 to 9 learn practical skills and gain the ability to work confidently with food. They have a good idea of kitchen management and are well versed with a variety of kitchen equipment.

Years 10 and 11 may choose to study Food and Nutrition as an optional GCSE. At this level, more advanced theories and concepts of nutrition are taught. Students learn about the function of ingredients and the scientific principles involved in a variety of processes.

In Years 12 and 13, students experience practical cookery sessions as part of the CAS (Community, action, and service) programme, preparing them for life after school.
