Textiles technology

Our textiles programme teaches students to understand the design, manufacturing, and marketing processes in the textiles industry. It also teaches students greater awareness of environmental concerns relating to production, and asks students how as designers and consumers they can make a difference.

We emphasise practical product-making at BSB, encouraging students to express their individuality and create exciting, challenging, unique pieces – essential for students hoping to go on to a career in textiles or fashion. Students also contribute towards other projects, such as producing costumes for the drama department, or producing garments for fashion shows at the School. Visits to exhibitions and events across Belgium and Europe are organised regularly.

Curriculum

Students follow a short course in Years 7 to 9. These “design and make” sessions enable students to select appropriate materials, tools, and equipment, teach basic design and ICT skills, and give students the opportunity to express their creativity across a wide range of projects.

Years 10 and 11 are able to study Textiles at GCSE. This popular option places emphasis on creativity and practical work, teaching students a wide range of textile applications for both fashion and interior products. Students are encouraged to pursue their own areas of interest, as well as develop a greater understanding of sustainability in design, using recycled materials that promote environmental awareness.

Years 12 and 13 may study Textile Design as an A Level option. This course is an essential foundation for a number of different career paths, from designer to fashion merchandising and buying. The course is divided between written and practical work, with both coursework and a final exam contributing towards students’ results.
