Art and design
Our art and design classes enable students' individuality and creativity to flourish. Students develop a broad range of artistic skills, from the ability to critically interpret and appreciate art, to conveying their feelings using a wide variety of creative methods and techniques. Whether they see themselves as a painter, graphic designer, or future film-maker, students are taught to express themselves and develop their technique, responding in a personal and creative way to the wider world.

The department gives students a solid background in the theory of art and design. It enables them to think critically and understand the history of art in context, as well as teaching students vital practical skills.
Students are given the opportunity to learn practical skills in many areas, such as:
- Drawing and painting
- Three dimensional graphic design
- Graphic design and printmaking
- Textile design and
- Computer art and film and video
All year groups are given the opportunity to go on outings to museums and exhibitions. Years 12 and 13 enjoy a biannual 5-day trip to Venice. Naturally, we encourage students to visit museums and galleries independently, as soon as they’re old enough to do so.
Curriculum
Students in Years 7 to 9 work on a range of art, design, and craft projects which introduce elements of art history, contemporary art, and the traditions of other cultures, while also teaching the students a variety of key practical skills.
Years 10 and 11 study towards a GCSE qualification in art and design. Students are introduced to a wide variety of materials, processes, and practices. Students study fine art, three dimensional design, and graphic communication – giving them a broad range of skills from drawing and painting through to sculpting, illustration, advertising, and typography.
Years 12 and 13 may choose to study art either at A Level or as part of their IB Diploma. The IB focuses on art within the context of a wider cultural awareness, promoting visual and contextual knowledge of art from various cultures. It also encourages students to create experimental, challenging, unique works of art. A Level students pursue a similar course, with an emphasis on developing specialist skills to enable them to express their thoughts and feelings creatively.
