Film

The 20th century was dominated by one form of media: film. The 21st century looks set to be the same. An understanding of film enables students to put society in context – to see how societies perceive themselves, their pasts, their futures, and their ideas.

Students are encouraged to see the subtexts within films and use them as a starting point for debate, as well as learning how to use film-making techniques and equipment to produce their own films, expressing their stories -- and their ideas -- using this exciting and contemporary medium.

Outside of the classroom, our well attended film club gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and discuss a wider range of films.

Curriculum

In Years 7 to 9, students are introduced to film via discussion of videos in class, learning to critically appraise messages. During ICT lessons, students are taught basic film making and film editing skills using the School’s suite of Apple Mac computers. More advanced skills are taught in Years 10 and 11.

At Post-16, students are given the opportunity to study film at IB Level. This is a mixture of critical analysis and practical work – students learn both technical and textual approaches and complete a course consisting of a mixture of independent study and presentations on films of their choosing, combined with a film of their own, supported by research and analysis.
