In touch with the wider world

Since our first organised fundraising event in 1973, we have been committed to supporting the work of a wide range of charities, often over a number of years or decades, with many charities enjoying our continued support.

BSB aims to challenge students beyond the classroom. Service learning is an important route to creating students who are caring and thoughtful. We encourage voluntary service and provide our students with opportunities to take part in a number of community based service learning projects.

Students expand their horizons as they help others, learning to become aware of global issues and active within the wider community. Our projects are designed to get students involved and thinking about how they can make a contribution, becoming active, aware, international citizens.

We organise and participate in a wide variety of outreach projects, as well as a school twinning programme with a school in Ghana, supported by funds raised by our students. Service learning projects include:

  • an environmental group working on conservation projects
  • a student-founded charity called Best of Both which works with four schools in Northern Ghana
  • an Amnesty International group
  • a team that works at Carina Residence, a home for Alzheimer’s patients
  • supporting a local refugee centre and day care centre for children with disability

As a socially aware and forward-thinking School, we are active and engaged in a range of beneficial community projects at local, national, and international levels. Each project is mutually beneficial: recipients gain our support, and our students and staff gain the experience, wisdom, and dedication that come with service learning.

Get involved

Our Best of Both group works with schools in Northern Ghana. It was started after students responded to a teacher’s visit to Ghana and noticed that the Urban Development and Education Foundation were working in a remote Ghanaian village mentioned in a textbook the School was using. Curious, he visited – students from the School’s Charities Committee decided to get involved. The Best of Both project is now a registered charity run by students. It aims to raise funds for Ghanaian villagers, improve education facilities, and participate in a cultural exchange. One recent project involved selling branded Best of Both water in order to raise funds for clean water for students in Ghana.

Volunteering is an essential part of the CAS (Community, Action, and Service) module in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma undertaken by many of our senior students. Younger years are able to volunteer too. To contact the Charities Committee, please email charities@britishschool.be.

The Best of Both is a non-profit organisation set up by BSB students. Visit our website to learn more.
