About BSB

Learning Together, Inspiring Success

BSB tagline - September 2007

Our tagline expresses the key elements of our School: learning, inspiring, a community working together and achieving success. The four words have been placed together so that they can resonate against each other. Read separately or together, each word provides interest and different meaning, but always related to the central themes of our School's Philosophy and Objectives

Location

The British School of Brussels (BSB) was founded in 1969 and was officially opened on its present site by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1970.  Occupying a beautiful site of 10 hectares, the School is surrounded by the woodlands and lakes of the nearby Royal Africa Museum in Tervuren, a 20 minute drive from central Brussels.

Students @ BSB

Kindercrib student

The British School of Brussels welcomes all children and young people.  The School is an inclusive, diverse, international community, one in which each child is encouraged to learn the value of both independent study and teamwork.  Young people at BSB are challenged intellectually and physically, and stimulated by a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities.

We recognise and celebrate student successes and encourage whole School interaction and support.  BSB works closely with parents and others locally to maintain its reputation as a friendly, welcoming school.

StudentsInternational Dimension
Currently some 52% of our students are British, with 70 other nationalities represented amongst a total of over 1150 students.

French is taught from the age of 5 (Year 1). A wide provision of modern language courses is available to students throughout the Secondary School. At the age of 11 (Year 7) students may choose a second foreign language (a choice between Dutch, German or Spanish).

BSB has an EAL (English as an Additional Language) Department which provides EAL support for non-native English speakers and English language immersion courses for children who have no English.

Curriculum
With some adaptations to reflect the multinational and multicultural nature of the School, BSB offers the National Curriculum for England to students from 3-18 years of age.

Curriculum

At the age of 16, students usually take ten GCSE examinations of which some are (I)GCSE. At Post-16, BSB is the only international school in Belgium where students have a choice between the UK General Certificate of Education Advanced Levels (GCE A Levels) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.  In addition, our own Foundation Course is an option for those students initially unable to access full A Level or IB Diploma courses.

Advice on higher and further education and career choice is available to all Post-16 students with the opportunity each year to listen to guest speakers from various disciplines in industry, business, journalism, military, law etc who are invited to the School each year during Careers Week.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Art Club

Different age groups come together for a wide range of extra-curricular activities held at the School which includes sports, drama, music, debating societies, chess and environmental groups.  At times students travel further afield, eg for The Duke of Edinburgh Award or the World Challenge Expeditions. The School participates very successfully in the International School Sports Tournaments (ISST) as well as taking part in local sports competitions.
