Secondary Science Technician

Our Primary School offers a bespoke enquiry-based curriculum. Students in Year 10 & 11 study for (I)GCSE and BTEC courses. Post-16 students can choose from three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC.

We are looking to appoint a Secondary Science Technician to join a supportive and dynamic team of teachers and technicians at BSB.

A Science laboratory technician will usually be assigned to work in a particular area of the science curriculum 11-18. On a daily basis he/she works in close contact with a team of teachers and is accountable to the teacher in charge of the assigned curriculum area (or Department Leader) to ensure the safe and smooth running of the department and the provision of resources for lessons. However, other tasks may be requested by the Head Technician or the Faculty Leader of Science and Technology who may also require that a science technician be re-directed to work in other areas of the science curriculum. The Science Technicians work as a team under the leadership of a Head Technician. We are now seeking a full-time science technician to work supporting the teaching of the IGCSE, A Level and IB Physics curricula which rely very heavily on practical and investigative work.

The major duties and responsibilities include the following:

1. Administration

• Petty cash purchases and accounts
• Sourcing and purchasing of laboratory equipment and chemicals
• Maintenance of up-to-date catalogues and price lists subject
• Requisitioning of agreed consumable supplies including utilities if appropriate
• Receipt of supplies including textbooks, stationery and capital expenditure items
• Recording of library books and staff resources, etc.
• Preparation of textbooks, files and stationery for issue to classes
• Maintenance of an inventory of chemicals, other materials and equipment and associated stock taking, including maintenance of data base inventory as appropriate
• Storage and labelling of chemicals, other materials and equipment
• Liaison with staff over use of equipment and materials
• Care of the plants in the department including the greenhouse
• Care of animals in the department including feeding and purchasing of food supplies
• Liaising with student helpers and supervising them in their allocated tasks

2. Safety and Security

• Implementation of agreed safety regulations for secure storage of materials
• Safe disposal of biological, chemical, electrical and radioactive waste materials
• Checking safety of equipment, glassware, taps, electrical sockets and plugs, etc.
• Reporting deterioration and damage of equipment and recommending replacement equipment to the Head of Department
• Maintenance of laboratories, greenhouses, preparation and storage rooms to ensure a clean, safe and orderly environment

3. Laboratory servicing

• Maintenance of stock solutions, glassware and other items
• Keeping the laboratories at optimum efficiency
• Setting up of class experiments and demonstrations as requested by the class teachers

4. Maintenance, Repair and Construction

• Regular checking of data-logging sensors and probes
• Keeping all equipment in good working order by repairing straightforward damage, or by arranging for outside repair work
• Construction and repair of equipment where possible

• A full-time (37,5 h per week), permanent contract though may be appointed initially on a one-year contract if we are unable to interview face-to-face due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions.
