Areas of learning
The development of the whole child is at the heart of BSB’s primary education programme. Learning in the Primary School is about developing personal, emotional and social skills as well as an intellectual and academic process.
Taking the best from a variety of curricula from around the world, the Primary curriculum was created to provide a bespoke programme designed to challenge and inspire all learners and ensure that all make progress, whatever their individual needs.
Integrated Learning Themes
In Primary School, the curriculum is centred on ‘Integrated Learning Themes’ (ILTs). We take a cross-curricular approach that makes links between different areas of learning.
Extra attention is given to English, Maths, computing and personal development as the essentials for learning and life. These subjects are embedded throughout the ILTs as well as being taught directly. Meanwhile, subject specialists teach French, Dutch, PE and Music with their own scheme of work. These subjects are also linked to ILTs where appropriate.
There is a strong emphasis on language learning. French is a core subject for ages 3-16 and we have bilingual French-English classes from age 4-14. Dutch is taught from beginner to mother-tongue level. There is also a strong appreciation of other languages, including the mother-tongues of students.
As you would expect in an international learning community, a number of children join BSB with limited English speaking abilities. We internally assess and evaluate all children and provide additional support where required. We ensure extra support is given to children for whom English is not their first language, to enable them to learn the language so that they can fully access the curriculum quickly to realise their full potential.
