A big surprise greeted our Upper Primary students when they returned to school in September: Rubens Library had been completely refurbished and redesigned.
Out with the red metal bookshelves, old seating and carpet, and welcome to a brand-new library. We worked to create a beautiful space incorporating low-level white shelving, a teaching area, a flexible study area and plenty of seating. Primary students love the new space and tell us it is much easier to find the books they like. They have quickly made themselves at home, sitting on the colourful cushion-seats, at one of the flip-top tables or in a reading nook. We are so pleased to offer our students this great new teaching and learning space. This is one of three libraries at BSB specially designed to meet the learning needs of different age groups.
To mark the successful redesign, we held an Official Opening event in October. A Year 5 class were given the exciting responsibility of planning and hosting the event. 5T acted as hosts and greeters, welcoming Parent Reps, Library volunteers and members of staff to the new learning space with genre menus and maps. Visitors seeking help could talk to the students on the help desk, who directed guests to their favourite genre. Genre geniuses (in fabulous costumes) were also on hand to show off some of their favourite titles. Our student librarian for the day explained the new library system, checking books in and out.
The all-important red ribbon was cut and Principal Melanie Warnes declared Rubens Library officially open. Comments from visitors in the visitors’ book remarked on how knowledgeable and confident 5T were. We are very proud of them! We would like to say a big thank you to our excellent maintenance team who removed the old furniture, repainted the walls and replaced the carpet to prepare the space for its new look!
