BSB Mathematicians Shine at ISMTF Senior Competition in Vienna

Six of our talented Year 12 students recently travelled to Vienna to represent The British School of Brussels at the prestigious ISMTF (International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation) Senior competition.

Selection for the trip was highly competitive, with students earning their places through internal heats held at school. Once in Vienna, students were divided into two teams of three to face off against 45 teams from some of the highest-achieving international schools in the world.

Competition Highlights

The event featured both individual and team-based challenges, with BSB students delivering a fantastic performance:

  • Top 10 Team Finish: Jason, Burak, and Mylena’s team secured an impressive 9th place out of 45 teams, demonstrating brilliant collaborative problem-solving.

  • Individual Achievement: Jason (Year 12) placed 11th overall in the individual rounds – a remarkable feat in such a high-calibre international field.

  • National Recognition: In a further celebration of mathematical excellence, Jason was also awarded the number one ranking in Belgium for the International Youth Math Challenge (IYMC).

Beyond the Classroom

The trip was about more than just equations; it provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with peers from across the globe. During the ‘Sunday Chase’, our students joined larger, mixed-school groups to explore the historic landmarks of Vienna.

The group also enjoyed some downtime at the city’s iconic outdoor ice rink. Even during the journey, the enthusiasm for the subject stayed high, with plenty of maths games played to keep their minds sharp while travelling.

“I am incredibly proud of all six students for their hard work, their collaborative spirit, and the brilliant way they represented BSB on the international stage,” said Maths teacher Kirsty Fish, who accompanied the students. “It was a successful and truly memorable trip for everyone involved.”
