BSB’s Leadership Team works closely with a Board of Trustees and a Board of Governors.

These boards are a diverse and representative group, comprising parents, staff members, distinguished UK and Belgian citizens and members of other international communities. All have a relevant background or experience in the professional or business world and they have a vital role in BSB’s governance.

Their task is a complex and challenging one; act as a ‘critical friend’, they help us to set our vision and ensure that the decisions we take, from our investments in infrastructure to our safeguarding processes, uphold our ambitious ideals. BSB was founded on not for profit principles, and so any excess proceeds from fees are reinvested back into the school, our staff, resources and facilities in order to further enhance students’ school experience.

James Penstone Principal

James, who began his tenure as Principal & CEO of The British School of Brussels in January 2025, brings nearly two decades of experience in international education leadership to the role. His career launched in the UK as Head of Geography at Hazelwick School before spending 13 transformative years at Bangkok Patana School in Thailand, where he held a variety of leadership positions. Notably, as Cross Campus Principal for Whole School Development, he helped shape a cohesive school culture and led strategic initiatives that advanced collaboration and innovation across the school.

Most recently, James served as Secondary School Principal at ICS Inter-Community School Zurich for over six years. During this time, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to student well-being, curricular innovation, professional development, and navigating complex challenges. He earned a reputation for fostering a culture of distributed leadership and inspiring excellence within a thriving international school community.

James is deeply passionate about empowering students to take ownership of their learning and to make meaningful contributions to their communities, both now and in the future. He believes that true educational impact happens when students are placed at the centre of their learning journey. As he puts it: “Sharing leadership, reflecting with purpose, communicating openly, striving for excellence, and always putting students first—this is what drives me as an educator.”

James Johnson Vice Principal & Head of Secondary School

James arrived at BSB in 2019 and worked as Assistant Head and then Deputy Head with Responsibility for Care, Guidance and Support across the Secondary School. Prior to joining BSB, James developed a broad experience of leadership in schools in the UK, including a period of time as Head of Secondary.  A History teacher by training, James graduated from Portsmouth University before achieving his PGCE from The University of the West of England. He is currently studying for his MA in Education focusing on Pastoral Care.

James loves the vibrant atmosphere of our international school and prioritises ensuring all students have sense of belonging.
