BSB to host Play Unified

Swimming Gala with Special Olympics Belgium

NEWS 27 September 2017

BSB was delighted to welcome representatives from Special Olympics Belgium and our parents’ association, Families of BSB, to a reception in school on Tuesday 26 September.

The occasion marked the official handover of a cheque for €10,000 raised by the annual Families of BSB Summer Ball. Eddy Becker, Special Olympics Co-Chair, accepted the cheque with thanks, noting that the donation will go towards a Play Unified Swimming Gala in conjunction with BSB students, as well as the National Games.

Special Olympics Belgium launched the Play Unified campaign with the aim to reach 20,000 people with intellectual disabilities to give them the opportunity to practice sports in teams with valid partners in regular clubs and federations all over Belgium. This year BSB will host a Play Unified Swimming Gala on Saturday 9 December. The Gala will include approximately 30 Special Olympics athletes from at least two Brussels swimming clubs, together with 30 swimmers from BSB. This will be organised by Secondary School CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) students.

We were pleased to be joined by Special Olympics athletes Bart Van der Veken, Evi Ploegaerts and Pieter Schram at the event. We were also joined by many of the sponsors, including representatives from the Noble Collection, Dan Hunter Transformation and ING Bank, whose support helps us to continue our relationship with this important organisation.

Melanie Warnes, BSB Principal, thanked Families of BSB and sponsors for their generosity and welcomed the Upcoming Play Unified Swimming Gala as a new opportunity to continue our support of Special Olympics Belgium, as well as to build relationships between BSB and Special Olympic athletes.

BSB has supported Special Olympics Belgium throughout its 26-year history. We are committed to the charter signed earlier this year to become a ‘Play Unified friend‘ and we share the philosophy and the values of solidarity, respect and integration which Special Olympics Belgium promotes through Play Unified sports.

We now look forward to the first ever Play Unified Swimming Gala at BSB in December and the close future collaboration this will bring between our students and Special Olympians.
