We are looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced full or part time Learning Mentor to join the Secondary School Additional Educational Needs (AEN) team, within the Faculty of Student Support.

The successful candidate will bring sound experience of working with Secondary-aged  AEN (Additional Educational Needs) learners in an English-medium international school context.

Your Role:

Our students are fantastic but being a teenager can be tough! They are under pressure from teachers at school and parents at home to study hard and do well in exams but are also coping with the biggest period of physical and emotional change in their life. All this while trying to find their place in their peer group in a mobile community with many new students.

We are looking for an outstanding communicator with young adults who can listen, help them plan and manage their time and see a way through the demands of school life and raise their aspirations.

Your role is to support and further the learning of individuals, or small groups of Secondary aged students (typically aged 11 – 18) with AEN needs. Some in-class support will be required but also individual support with a focus on self-esteem, motivation, revision and study skills. It is expected that you would support students with their learning, preparation for examinations, assessments and potentially applications to university. Working closely with the exam team to support student access arrangements for public and internal examinations is a key expectation of the role. The successful candidate will work closely and cooperatively with department colleagues and with mainstream teachers across different subject areas. In addition to the Faculty Leader of Student Support/Department leader of AEN and Heads of Year/Care, Guidance and Support colleagues with the shared objective of facilitating the students’ wellbeing and access to the mainstream curriculum in a range of subjects. He/she will demonstrate professional and personal qualities, which will enable him, or her, to make a significant contribution to the continuing development of the Student Support Faculty and to the life of the school.

Your Profile:

  • have experience of working with students in an educational setting and be sensitive towards and appreciative of the students’ wide range of cultural and language backgrounds;
  • be organised, adaptable, initiative-taking, creative, able to exercise discretion and have a sense of humour;
  • be an excellent team player and communicator, building trust with students, staff and parents;
  • be a good role model and be ambitious for students’ learning;
  • be independent, flexible, patient, proactive and personable;
  • be willing and able to contribute towards department planning, the production of teaching and learning resources and discussions about students’ individual needs and progress;
  • As BSB is a busy extracurricular school, it would be an advantage if the successful candidate could offer a particular activity as part of this programme, as well as a willingness to go on school trips (day trips and residential);
  • Knowledge and experience of the British curriculum and its methodologies would be a decided advantage;
  • be fluent in one or more languages, in addition to English, would be an advantage
