A celebration of community at BSB Family Day

Campus comes alive with the spirit of togetherness and belonging

The British School of Brussels campus was alive with laughter, music, and camaraderie this weekend as the community came together for our annual Family Day. More than just a school event, BSB’s Family Day 2025 once again reaffirmed what makes BSB unique: the sense of belonging that binds families, staff, and students into one vibrant community.

From the moment families started to arrive at lunchtime, the atmosphere was one of relaxation and fun, despite the rainclouds overhead. The usual weekly rhythm of lessons and academic schedules was set aside, replaced by games, activities, food stalls, and an ongoing hum of conversations between parents and friends, both familiar and new. The day was a chance for everyone to pause, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the ties that make BSB more than just a place of learning.

“We’ve been at the school for only a few weeks and this is the first real event we’ve been to since my son started,” one parent waiting patiently in line for food said. “In the hour or so we’ve been here, at least three other parents have welcomed us and offered help with anything we need settling in. We feel very cared for already.”

A chance to connect away from the classroom

Children darted between activities while parents and staff laughed and reconnected over shared meals and treats provided by a dedicated team of volunteers made up of students, staff and members of of our Families of BSB parents association. The positive energy was palpable, with voices, laughter and the sounds of celebration filling the campus air even when the rain began to fall. Friendships grew stronger, and new connections were made, weaving together the threads of BSB’s rich and diverse community.

A strong theme of the day was belonging. Alumni, returning families, and newcomers alike mingled effortlessly, reflecting BSB’s welcoming spirit. The event demonstrated the importance of creating opportunities outside the classroom where every member of the community, regardless of background or age, could feel part of something bigger.

Nurturing the strong sense of belonging

For many, the highlight was not a single activity, but the simple gift of time spent together – time to step out of busy routines and enjoy moments of shared conversation, and connection. That opportunity to gather, play, and unwind demonstrated that community life at BSB is about more than education; it is about nurturing the relationships that sustain and strengthen everyone who is part of the school.

“Family Day is a highlight of every first term for us,” said one father, overseeing an enthusiastic table football match between his two children. “It’s a great opportunity to take a breath from the first few busy weeks of school to meet up with old friends. There’s a lot of new faces here today too which is great.”

As families departed, there was a tangible sense of warmth lingering in the air. The smiles, the friendships rekindled, and the bonds deepened throughout the day spoke to the heart of BSB’s identity. In bringing the community together, Family Day was a reminder that belonging, joy, and togetherness form the foundations of life at The British School of Brussels.
