Department Leader of Chemistry

Starting January or September 2026

The British School of Brussels (BSB) is a leading not-for-profit, inclusive international school with 1,350 students from around 70 countries. Set on a stunning green campus in Tervuren – close to both vibrant Leuven and cosmopolitan Brussels – we combine world-class facilities with a warm, welcoming community.

What truly sets BSB apart is not just what we do, but how we do it. Strong relationships, a shared sense of belonging, and a relentless commitment to quality underpin every aspect of school life. Our students are inspired to aim high, broaden their horizons, and thrive-academically, personally, and socially.

From our bespoke enquiry-based Primary curriculum to our outstanding range of pathways at Post-16 (A Levels, IB Diploma, and BTEC), and an enrichment programme offering hundreds of activities each week, BSB provides exceptional opportunities for every child. Our graduates go on to top universities worldwide, and these results are the natural outcome of a culture built on care, curiosity, and collaboration.

The Chemistry Department

Chemistry at BSB is a thriving subject. It sits with the other Experimental Sciences and Food Science and Nutrition in the Faculty of Science, a group of 17 teachers and 5 technicians led by a Faculty Leader. Each subject specialism has a department leader or subject coordinator.

All students in Years 7 – 11 study Science and many go on to choose it as an option for A-level and IB. The curriculum for Years 7 – 9 broadly follows the English National Curriculum, though with some enrichment and real-world learning to enhance it, making it more appropriate for all our students. In Years 10 and 11, the majority of students study the IGCSE Science (Double Award) but are taught by subject specialists in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Post-16, students can select A Level Chemistry or at IB they can study Chemistry at Standard or Higher Level.

The department is well-resourced. All Science lessons are taught in a laboratory which has a computer docking station and HD Interactive Display. Each teacher has their own laptop. Teaching in the Chemistry Department is done through a range of activities and there is a very large emphasis placed on practical work.
