BSB is a not for profit, inclusive independent international school comprising 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. Located in the parkland of Tervuren, we enjoy world class facilities set within an inspiring green campus, yet near all the amenities of the university city of Leuven and the capital city of Brussels. But what makes our school an exceptional place to learn and grow, and what really sets us apart, are the relationships we build, the culture of kinship we foster and the pursuit of quality in everything that we do.
We are committed to providing a vibrant and engaging holistic education for our students in a harmonious atmosphere. With everyone learning and working together to inspire success, we have created a thriving community with the notion of ‘one school’ at its heart. By balancing academic endeavour with pastoral care, and classroom-based learning with enrichment opportunities, we provide our students with the best opportunities possible to broaden their aspirations and horizons.
Our curriculum is British based and uniquely adapted to the needs of our international and diverse student body. There is an Early Childhood Centre for children aged 1-3. Our Primary School offers a bespoke enquiry-based curriculum. Students in Years 10 & 11 study for (I)GCSE and BTEC courses. Post-16 students can choose from three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC. Our Enrichment programme is exceptional, offering over 100 activities per week.
As one of the top performing schools in the world, BSB students go on to attend a wide range of top universities across the globe. We believe that our exceptional student outcomes and top world rankings are really a happy by-product of our unique culture built on care, curiosity, and collaboration.
We are looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced full or part time Learning Mentor to join the Secondary School Faculty of Student Support.
The successful candidate will bring sound experience of working with Secondary-aged EAL (English as an Additional Language) and/or AEN (Additional Educational Needs) learners in an English-medium international school context.
Your Role:
Our students are fantastic but being a teenager can be tough! They are under pressure from teachers at school and parents at home to study hard and do well in exams but are also coping with the biggest period of physical and emotional change in their life. All this while trying to find their place in their peer group in a mobile community with many new students.
We are looking for an outstanding communicator with young adults who can listen, help them plan their time, develop their English language skills and see a way through the demands of school life and raise their aspirations.
Your role is to support and further the learning of individuals, or small groups of Secondary aged students (typically aged 11 – 18) with EAL and/or AEN needs. Some in-class support will be required but also individual support with a focus on self-esteem, motivation, revision and study skills. It is expected that you would support students with their learning; in particular, with their English language acquisition, preparation for examinations, assessments and potentially applications to university. Working closely with the exam team to support student access arrangements for public and internal examinations is a key expectation of the role. The successful candidate will work closely and cooperatively with department colleagues and with mainstream teachers across different subject areas. In addition to the Faculty Leader of Student Support/Department leader of AEN and/or the Department leader of EAL and Heads of Year/Care, Guidance and Support colleagues with the shared objective of facilitating the students’ wellbeing and access to the mainstream curriculum in a range of subjects. He/she will demonstrate professional and personal qualities, which will enable him, or her, to make a significant contribution to the continuing development of the Student Support Faculty and to the life of the school.
