Purpose of the role:
To give professional and effective first aid and general medical assistance to all students, staff and visitors to the school.
In liaison with fellow part-time nurses, to advise the school on good practice guidelines in all health-related matters and inform of legislation changes in Belgium and the UK.

The successful applicant will:

  • Develop, review and implement health/medical policies and procedures in liaison with fellow part-time nurses (and Line Manager and Leadership Team as appropriate).
  • In liaison with fellow part-time nurses, advise on all health-related matters, including preventive medical care.
  • Maintain accurate student medical records in the school’s database.
  • Liaise with designated school safeguarding staff and external agencies in child protection issues.
  • Work with the Nursing Team in any emergency medical support of the school’s major incident plan.

Key tasks:

  • Support children with medical needs in school.
  • Administer daily medication under the school and Belgian national guidelines.
  • Provide initial first aid and medical advice.
  • Keep a daily record of attendance at the school nurse and treatment given.
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed in relation to reported accidents.
  • Ensure required and legal paperwork is completed for external local services (e.g. Kind & Gezin, medisch schooltoezicht,…)
  • Ensure first aid boxes are in strategic places across the school and are kept updated.
  • Liaise with teaching staff on health counselling and pastoral care of students appropriately.
  • Communicate ‘life threatening’ medical conditions in students to all staff and update appropriately.
  • Organise and implement first aid and other health/medical programmes for staff and sport/activity coaches.
  • Work with teaching staff on health counselling, preventive and pastoral care appropriately.
  • Ensure effective first aid at school events as appropriate.
  • Liaise with the school’s Company Doctor on legal health/medical checks as appropriate.
  • Provide administrative support to the external Leuven Medical Team.

Qualifications

  • Registered nursing qualification recognised by FOD Belgium

Experience

  • Relevant nursing experience, ideally in a community or school-based setting

  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills, with ability to work on own initiative.
