Stages of Learning

Our curriculum is British-based but adapted to fit our European context and international student body.

In Years 7-9, students gain a solid foundation in a wide variety of subjects. Year 7-9 students largely follow the same curriculum, but have a choice of Dutch, German or Spanish as their second foreign language after French.

Years 10 and 11 are the first exam years at the school. Students typically take nine or ten GCSEs or iGCSEs. Here, students have increasing choice and can tailor their curriculum to suit their skills and interests. In addition to the core subjects of English, French, Mathematics and Science, students can choose from a wide variety of subjects including languages, humanities, arts and design technology subjects.

The final two years of school, Year 12 and 13, represent the greatest choice for students as they prepare for higher education or the world of work. BSB offers three routes – IB, A Levels and BTEC – representing a wide variety of subject and learning styles. Click on the course guides below to find out more.

Languages are integral to our curriculum

A French-English bilingual stream is available in Years 7-9. French is also a core subject at BSB and students are placed in sets according to ability, allowing some students to take GCSE and International GCSE French early and continue to AS Level French or GCSE and International GCSE French as a First Language. Post-16 students may study for a bilingual IB Diploma in French-English or Dutch-English.

Engaging with the outside world

Our Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme is an important part of the curriculum. This provides our students with opportunities to engage with the outside world in purposeful and ethical way. Students are encouraged to make a positive impact on the community and become more self-aware, as well as becoming engaged and active citizens of the world. CAS activities can be as diverse as helping at a centre for hippotherapy to organising a charity campaign in school.
